Tulum @ Azulik

Tulum, Mexico´s former hippie town has developed into a fancy hotspot attracting travelers from all over the world. The little town stretching over 3 km along the beach invite your flip flops to step into a bohemian dream world, a combination of trendy simplicity mixed with a chilled romantic vibe. Lie in the white sand and sip at your Margarita cocktail, jump in the turquoise sea or book yourself in for one of the legendary bikini bootcamp sessions.

Yoga, body scrubs and an endless variety of freshly squeezed juices and vegan food options make this town the new Mekka for everyone addicted to the healthy lifestyle.

How to get there:

Fly to Cancun airport. From there follow the people carrying yoga mats on to a 90 minute shuttle drive to Tulum.

Where to stay:

Azulik:

The eco chic jungle treehouse right on the beach offers the special Tulum experience for all nature lovers wishing to fall asleep to nothing else than the sound of the waves. All the rooms are designed in bohemian adam and eve style with wood materials and creative details such as mosaic bathtubs. My highlight was the room terrace with beachbeds, hammocks, bathtub and a swing overlooking the ocean. The hotel provides only candles and no electricity during the night, which adds a very romantic feeling to it.

BeTulum:

For all of you who are looking for a very modern and exclusive accommodation, BeTulum is the most trendy place providing bungalows with private pools located at one of the nicest areas of the beach being private providing beachclub character.

What not to miss:

Saturdays at Papaya Playa Project: Be guest and dance the night away when this hip beachfront bar and restaurant turns into a party with live dj sets of finest house music.

Coqui Coqui: Looking for the perfect Tulum gift ? this small a list hotel boutique is famous for its own perfumes, choose one of the endless paradise smells produced in the Tulum area.

Cenotes: In the Yucatan area you find more than 8000 Cenotes, which are natural water sinkholes with crystal clear water beaming you into a lush nature scenery out of this world when going for a morning swim. Rent a car and explore them all, each one is different. Besides the famous Ik Kil Cenote, make sure to also plan a stop at my favorite Nicte Ha and the underground cave cenote, Sac Actun.

Chichen Itza & Maya Ruins: Explore the history of the Mayan and visit the archaeological ruins on the beach of Tulum and the pyramid temple Chichen Itza that is a 90 minute drive away from Tulum.

Valladolid: On my trip to Chichen Itza I also stopped at Valladolid, a colonial colorful town which reminded me of Cuba. Local shops, restaurants and a little colorful chapel make this a great stopover.

Where to eat:

Posada Margherita :My fav Italian cuisine offering the best pasta and seafood in beautiful romantic setting with wooden décor and candle light.

Hartwood: The probably most famous restaurant in Tulum, owned by a New Yorker, requires personal reservation and is a culinary invention of fresh vegetables and meat variations cooked over a wood fire before presented to its hip crowd.

Casa Jaguar: stylish outdoor dining restaurant and bar in dimmed light setting offering fusion Asian Mexican food.

What else to know:

Many of you and my friends were concerned about safety in Mexico these days. The Maya Riviera area is considered to be very safe. The best way to get around the beach area of Tulum is by bike or taxi. For other activities we rented a car at Payless Car rental in the city of Tulum for 35 dollar a day.

In terms of swimming, depending on the season of the year I would recommend to double check with the hotels as some areas of the beach can get a lot of seaweed.
